Taoyuan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Ministry of Agriculture

Taoyuan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station was established on January 1, 1982. Its origins trace back to two predecessors: one being the Taipei Prefecture Rice Breeding Station established in 1917 in Da'an, Taipei, and Yilan, focusing on rice breeding research. In 1923, part of the Yilan facility was converted to the Taipei Prefecture Ramie Cultivation Experimental Station, while the Da'an section became the Taipei Prefecture Rice Breeding Station. By 1925, the two facilities merged to form the Taipei Prefecture Agricultural Experimental Station. The other predecessor dates back to the establishment of the Hsinchu Prefecture Agricultural Association Rice Breeding Station in 1918 and the Taoyuan Prefecture Agricultural Association Rice Breeding Station in 1919. In 1920, the Taoyuan Prefecture Agricultural Association Rice Breeding Station merged into the Hsinchu Prefecture Agricultural Association Rice Breeding Station as its Taoyuan branch. In 1928, the Hsinchu Prefecture Agricultural Association Rice Breeding Station was reorganized into the Hsinchu Prefecture Agricultural Experimental Station, located in Hsinchu City. Both the Taipei and Hsinchu Prefecture Agricultural Experimental Stations were responsible for improving agricultural and livestock breeding, agricultural surveys, and training.

After Taiwan's retrocession, the station underwent several changes. In 1946, it was renamed the County Agricultural Experimental Station; in 1947 and 1948, the Hsinchu and Taipei County Agricultural and Forestry General Stations were established respectively. In 1950, it was renamed the District Agricultural and Forestry Improvement Station, and in 1960, it was reorganized as the District Agricultural Improvement Station.

To streamline the organization and enhance its functions to meet the needs of regional agricultural development, on January 1, 1982, with the approval of the Taiwan Provincial Government, the two stations were merged and renamed as Taiwan Provincial Taoyuan District Agricultural Improvement Station. The original Hsinchu District Agricultural Improvement Station site was retained for office use. However, due to the unsuitability of the Hsinchu urban area for agricultural research, a new site spanning thirty hectares was acquired in Houzhuang Village, Xinwu Township, Taoyuan County, and a new facility was built. Construction was completed on January 20, 1985, and the Hsinchu station relocated and began operations there on May 16 of the same year. The relocation expenses were partly covered by a donation of about one-third of the original Hsinchu station site, approximately three hectares, from the Taoyuan County Farmer’s Association. The remainder was funded through a property-to-property conversion plan supported by the provincial government.

On July 1, 1986, the Lanyang Branch Station in Yilan County was transferred from this station to the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station. The service area included Taipei County, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Keelung City, Taipei City, and Hsinchu City. From May 23, 1997, Miaoli County was transferred to the newly established Taiwan Provincial Miaoli District Agricultural Research and Extension Station. The service included Taipei County, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County, Keelung City, Taipei City, and Hsinchu City. After a reorganization on July 1, 1999, the station came under the jurisdiction of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan. The service area remained the same.

On August 1, 2023, our station was reorganized as Taoyuan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Ministry of Agriculture. The service area now includes Keelung City, New Taipei City, Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu County.
